Learn to Bookmark Your Favorite Web Sites

Use your Web Browser's Favorites feature (also known as Bookmarks) to help you remember your favorite websites. First, we'll teach you how to save your favorite website addresses and then we we'll show you how to go back to them in the future.

Once you learn how to bookmark web pages, you will never have to remember their web site addresses again. When you are viewing a web site you want to visit again, there are two ways to save them for future use.

Hold CTRL D on your keyboard. If you hold the CTRL key (bottom left hand corner of your keyboard) and then press the letter D, a small screen will pop up called either 'Add Favorite' or 'Add Bookmark'. Select 'Add' or 'OK'. The pop-up screen will close and this web site will now be included in your list of favorite web sites. (For Mac users, you will use the Cmd key instead of the CTRL key. The Cmd key is the one with the Apple logo next to the space bar.)

Select Favorites or Bookmarks from your browser's menu bar. If you recall from our previous lesson on the menu bar, you should see a list of menu items across the top of your browser starting with 'File', then 'Edit', etc. Look at the adjacent image for an example. Select the one that says either 'Favorites' or 'Bookmarks'. (Internet Explorer uses the term 'Favorites' while other web browser programs use 'Bookmarks'.) A drop-down menu will pop up. From this list, select 'Add to Favorites' or 'Bookmark this Page'. The pop-up screen will close and this web site will now be included in your list of favorite web sites. If you are using Internet Explorer, you can also click on the yellow star with a green plus sign, just like you see in the adjacent image, to add a favorite web site.

Let's try this now. You can use this page you are viewing now. However, you may prefer to use our home page, which is www.ShopWithTrust.com. That is the main page for our website. If you use our main page, follow the steps noted above and then hit the Back Button to return and read the rest of this lesson.

Using your Bookmarks (Favorites) List.

To easily find this web site again, there are generally two options.

Hold CTRL I on your keyboard. If you hold the CTRL key (bottom left hand corner of your keyboard) and then press the letter I, a small screen will pop up on the left side and list all of the web sites you have bookmarked as a favorite. (For clarification, be sure to use the letter 'i', the small case version of 'I'. We don't want you to confuse it with the small case version of letter 'L'.) Select 'Shop With Trust' and the web site will open up on your screen. (For Mac users, you will use the Cmd key instead of the CTRL key. The Cmd key is the one with the Apple logo next to the space bar.)

Select Favorites or Bookmarks from your browser's menu bar. You You can also access your Bookmarks from your Menu Bar. Again, click on either 'Favorites' or 'Bookmarks'. A drop-down menu will pop up. From this list, select 'Shop With Trust' and the web site will open up on your screen.

Bookmark your Favorite pages on this web site.

For our example in this lesson, we recommended that you bookmark our home page, www.ShopWithTrust.com. However, you could bookmark any page you would like to return to on a frequent basis. For example, if you prefer our web page that lists major Department Stores, you could bookmark that page instead. You can do the same with our All Retail Stores page, Weekly Store Ads page or any other page you prefer.

Change your personal Home Page

Now that you know how to Bookmark your favorite web sites, we will share one advanced concept. If you really like a particular web page, you can change a setting so that it is the first web page you always see when you open your internet browser. This first page you always see is known as your home page. For example, if you really like one of the pages on our web site, you can follow these simple instructions. (Be aware that by setting a new home page, your current home page will no longer be used, unless you have that page open as well using tabbed browsing. Tabbed browsing will be covered in a future lesson.)

  1. Go to the Menu Bar along the top of your browser and select 'Tools'. A drop-down menu will pop up. (For Mac users, select 'Edit'.)
  2. From the drop-down menu, select 'Internet Options'. A new screen will pop up with multiple tabs. (For Mac users, select 'Preferences' and then continue with the same steps below.)
  3. The 'General' tab should be selected by default. If not, click on the 'General' tab.
  4. On the 'General' tab, you will see 'Home Page'. Underneath 'Home Page', select 'Use Current'.
  5. Select 'OK' and you are finished! (For Mac users, there is not an 'OK' button. Just close the screen.)

That ends this lesson on using Bookmarks. Now you know how to Bookmark web pages so you no longer have to remember your favorites. If you forget how to use this feature, you can always come back to this article by using our 'Quick Access for Beginners' drop-down list in the right column of each page.
